Orthoceras is an extinct "straight" cephalopod that lived during the Devonian period nearly 400 million years ago. Like other cephalopods they lived inside of their shell, had tentacles they could use to grab food and used jet propulsion, squirting water to move. Rock containing their abundant fossils is mined near Erfoud, Morocco and is commonly shaped and polished into decorative pieces.
This is a 19” tall, tower made out of fossiliferous rock. Areas where the larger Orthoceras fossils are located has been polished so that their chambered structure can easily be seen. The base is pretty flat so that it stands up on it's own. Please note that this is a fairly heavy piece weighing around 18 lbs.
Measures approximately 19“ x 6“ x 4“
No chips or cracks
