The story is that this antique coat was crocheted out of strings from mop heads in the Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina.
I have no reason to doubt that, because it’s super heavy (not like today’s yarn). Its ivory lining is hand sewn in the coat. It’s very petite so whoever wore it, or intended to wear it, was very tiny through the shoulders and waist. It doesn’t appear to have ever been worn, and it wouldn’t be a practical wardrobe piece in today’s world as the weight of it is substantially heavy.
It was probably a post depression era piece made out of possible necessity, or fear, that never was needed or warranted.
It’s a good story, and a testament to the Appalachian/Blue Ridge Mountain Heritage.
This would be a good museum piece for display.
