19th century books 1875, Historical essays in a two volume set bound in brown cloth, gilt gold lettering on spine with pictorial floral endpapers in VERY GOOD condition considering its age! Undeniably great 19th century writing by eminent English essayist / historian, Thomas Carlyle. He invents for himself a style combining epic poetry with philosophical treatise, exuberant story telling with scrupulous attention to historical fact. A unique work of history still in print over 150 years today.
Inscription inside stamped, "From the Library of the James A. Stewart's." Typical shelf wear and scuffing to fabric cover. Spine in tact. Pages yellow from age. Volume I creased at page 270. Volume two has a bit of fabric loose at top of spine (see pictures please), and opens at page 254. No loose, missing, torn, creased or marked leaves.
