At the call for troops in 1861, Charles Henry Morgan enlisted in the Union Army and was first mustered into the 1st Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry as a private. In 1862 he became an officer in the 21st Wisc. Before he was twenty-two he had escaped five times from rebel prisons and had fought in eleven pitched battles and engagements of the war. He had many remarkable escapes from imprisonment or death.
