FREDERIC CLARK DUNLAP (1868 - 1928) PROMINENT AMERICAN CIVIL and HYDRAULIC ENGINEER OF PHILADELPHIA – A LEADER IN FLUID MECHANICS FROM 1886-1928, CHIEF OF THE BUREAU OF WATER, DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS, PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA 1907-1912 and 1923-1924, CHIEF ENGINEER OF THE BUREAU OF WATER IN PHILA, & CHIEF OF THE BUREAU OF HIGHWAYS FOR THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA 1917-1923. Dunlap was a famous Philadelphia engineer, who played an integral part in designing and building the Philadelphia water supply at the turn of the 19th century, which was a model of sanitary city water in its day. Dunlap is mentioned in water engineering textbooks today! During Dunlap’s illustrious tenure as Chief of the Philadelphia Water Works, he was in charge of the construction of the Torresdale Filtration plant, which was then the largest slow sand filtration system in the world. He also was responsible for the augmentation and construction of a second high pressure fire service station in 1912.
