FROM THE MID 1940's TO MID 1950"s WE USE TO TAKE A DAY TRIP FROM CHICAGO TO COAL CITY TO FIND FOSSILS. ALL YOU NEEDED WAS YOUR TRUSTY HAMMER AND CANVAS BAG. THE MOUNDS OF EARTH WERE STILL THERE FROM STRIP MINING. SO UP AND DOWN YOU WOULD GO FILLING YOUR BAG WITH THE REDISH/BROWN NODULES. YOU COULD FIND A PLACE TO SIT DOWN AND START TO OPEN THE NODULES SLOWLY. SOMETIMES BY TAPPING ON THE EDGE THE NODULE WOULD OPEN INTO 2 SIDES BUT NOT ALWAYS. OR TAKE YOUR BAG HOME TO OPEN.
SO HAPPY WHEN WE DID AS NOW, THEY HAVE LEVELED THE LAND AND RE BURIED 1,000'S OF FOSSILS THAT WILL NEVER BE OPENED.
