Fritz Faiss (1905-1981)was born in the Black Forest section of Germany. He trained as a medical doctor and was a student at the Bauhaus and the Stuttgart Academy of Fine Arts. He was part of the abstract expressionist movement. Fritz came to the United States in 1951. He married Janet Dee Wullner, also an artist, in 1966. They lived in Valencia, CA, and taught workshops together in Big Sur, Del Mar, and Hawaii. Fritz is best known for his encaustic paintings, woodcuts, stained glass, line drawings, and water colors. He taught at UCLA, the Otis Art Institute, and eventually California State University, Northridge, where he became a tenured professor of art. He wrote nine books. His works have been shown in galleries around the world.
