This is a genuine Star Ruby oval shaped cabochon pendant set in sterling silver 0.925. The measurements are 14 x 12 mm. It has a total of 8.5+ carats. The pendant itself measures approximately 1 inch long by 1/2 inch wide.
Star Rubies have a 3 point or 6 point asterism. This Ruby is the 6 point obviously! Stars are created when fibers of rutile (also known as silk), have light reflecting off of them in such a way that a star shape is formed.
This Ruby has lots of silk. Silk is actually desired as it is one way to prove that it is a guaranteed natural Ruby. I’m not sure who set this cabochon, but I think it would look better in a bezel setting. You may wish to have it mounted on a ring, or another pendant setting. imho
This was purchased from AAN, also known as America’s auction network some time in the early 2000s.
