“New England: Indian Summer (1865-1915)” by Van Wyck Brooks. Published by E.P. Dutton & Co., Inc., New York: 1940 (1st Edition, 18th Printing). The Harvard Club's 1940 prize book, with original recipient's name noted on the bookplate on the front pastedown. Top paper edge finished in bright gold gilt, with rough-cut detail along the fore-edge.
A beautiful example in the Harvard Club's prize binding, which consists of red 3/4 leather over red cloth-covered boards. Single-line gilt rules at the edges of the leather along the cover boards, with the Harvard Club's seal also stamped in gilt in the center of the front cover. Raised bands separate the spine into six sections with the title and author names stamped in gilt in sections two and four (from the top). Gilt decorations adorn the remaining sections.
