I am a HERERO woman from NAMIBIA.
I am wearing a typical flowing skirt, fitted bodice with leg'omutton sleeves and my carefully constructed headdress. Tall and haughty in appearance, Herero women walk with a slow, measured stride that dates to an earlier time, when our arms and legs were weighed down with brass rings.
Herero dress is derived from the early 20th century gowns worn by the wives of the German missionaries working in that area during the German colonization. These gowns evolved to colorful voluminous rounded dresses resembling healthy cows and the headdress is shaped like a cowhorn, reflecting the importance of cattle to the Herero people. Patchwork dresses are every-day dresses, while garments made of only one material are worn at special occasions.
The authentic costuming of this doll has been approved by Museum Africa, Johannesburg, South Africa.
Doll comes with stand.
