Julian Scott (1846 - 1901), Full color illustration of a Hopi girl form the "11th Census of the U.S." book. 9-13/4" x 7-7/8" (13" x 15" framed)

This stunning portrait by American artist Julian Scott (1846-1901) is one of the premier chromolithographs from Indians Taxed and Indians Not Taxed, published in 1894 by the U.S. House of Representatives for its 11th Census Report. (1890).

Sichumnavi is now Sichomovi, the middle village on the first Hopi Mesa. According to Scott, "unmarried women, maidens, wear their hair in the 'cartwheel' or 'sideboard' style, denoting virginity, that is, they have 'half a blanket to let' and ready to wed." Poobitchie wears long earrings of turquoise and corral and a necklace of shell beads.

Cited on p.215 of Taft. Very scarce and lithograph is in mint condition. There is a slight tear in the paper on the back top.
