Electric heating pads, hot water bot- tles, rubbing ointments and other devices heat only superficially and very slowly. They do not penetrate the skin deeply and instantly to where most pain and inflamation occur. The heat from these divices is transmitted by conduction through the skin and some of the heat is dissipated on the surface of the skin. As the heat slowly passes through the skin the flowing blood will absorb and carry the heat away from the area so that only a small percentage of the original heat energy will be available for relieving pain and inflamation.
