Original set of WWII-era U.S. Navy documents dated September 6 & 12, 1941, issued to Seaman 1st Class Rex Llyon Grant. This unique set includes typewritten orders from the Commanding Officer at Philadelphia Navy Yard and a letter from the U.S. Navy Recruiting Substation in St. Petersburg, FL.

The orders direct Grant to proceed to Norfolk, VA, and report for duty aboard the USS Long Island (AVG-1), the first escort carrier in U.S. Navy history. These documents illustrate pre-WWII naval mobilization just months before the U.S. entered the war after Pearl Harbor.
