Newkirk interviewed the Beales in the 1970s, and a friendship started from there. They lost touch when Edie moved to Florida but reconnected before her death on January 14, 2002.
I have spoken to Newkirk by phone, and he would tell me about the "Housewives of New York" TV show on Bravo. I didn't watch it before, but I was drawn to Sonja Morgan, who has been called "Edie Beale" many times, affectionately. I purchased this copy of MemoraBEALEia from Strand Books in Manhattan and researched to show that Newkirk did sign and send this book to Sonja Morgan of Housewives of New York.
