"How our myths overwhelm us. Could it be true that only a few of the Western gunmen, whether sheriffs or murderers, were capable of whipping a revolver out of a holster to swiftly bulls-eye any object, human or inanimate, at which they aimed? And could it therefore possibly be true that the majority of the gunmen either missed widely or ignominiously wounded themselves in the toe or groin? Alas, yes, that was probably more often the case. Furthermore, as always, the badmen were pretty seriously bad, and the good men were not as good as they should have been. There were a few startling exceptions to this on each side, and these continue to feed the myth of the "Western" with its clear-cut lines of good and bad."
