This is a mid to late 20th century Turkish Kilim, flat weave carpet. It is especially distinct and finely crafted in that it has a very uncommon, eleven different colors or more. The weaving is very tight and it is in excellent condition with no odors, stains, fading, or loss. It will require a pad as will any oriental rug if taken care of properly.
Kilims are not piled rugs like many oriental rugs that have warp and weft threads with thousands of individual knots tied on to them, one by one. Kilim weaves are tapestry weaves, or weft-faced plain weaves where the horizontal weft strands are pulled tightly downward so that they hide the vertical warp strands.
This particular example is very tightly and finely done meaning that it will last many times longer than a loosely woven and frankly, more simple effort
Don't confuse middle or far eastern rugs with American southwest or Central or South American rugs as many people do.
