Crafted in Hong Kong in the 1960’s, this classic Chinese gemstone bonsai tree is a striking example of the mid-century Chinoiserie style that was so popular during that era. Measuring just under 12” in height, the vibrant red-orange flowers are carved from carnelian & polished agate; the soft green leaves framing the petals are made from jade. The tree sits in a gold-trimmed hexagonal pot with engraved floral & Greek key designs, & the base is filled with colorful crushed stone chips for a finished, decorative touch.
The branches are wrapped wire, coated to look like bark, & carefully shaped for a natural, bonsai-style flow. It’s a lovely piece with great character — bold enough to be a focal point but still peaceful and balanced. These trees were popular as symbols of prosperity and harmony and make great decor for many different decorating schemes.
