On April 23, 1959, a surgical team at St. Francis Hospital performed Wichita's first open heart surgery. it was also the first time in the area that a new innovation called a heart-lung machine had been used. and the first time a tube had been placed in the heart. Surgeons spent 6-1/2 hours repairing a hole in the heart wall of 11-year-old Bobby Pearce of Augusta. He then had a chance for a normal life. The procedure, surgeons said, was "totally successful". In 1986, St. Francis Regional Medical Center continues to be a leader in cardiovascular care.
